Hi.
The base is not the typical shape for any of the Scottish makers, and the design is unusual ... but I would not rule out Vasart. An interesting piece.

Alan I shall try and take a couple more base pictures at different angles so to make it out easier
-
some more pics of base taken next to a vasart bros weight

The additional photos are not quite in focus but do give a general idea of how a base finish can look from different angles and with different lighting direction. Sometimes the central area can appear to be raised (similar to the Ysart 1 inch round pontil "buttons") or can appear to be a shallow depression.
There are a variety of finishes for my own Ysart Brothers (or earlier) items but some do show a smooth(ish) ground central depression with rougher grinding marks on the outer parts of the base.
A couple of the extra photos also show that the flag (or jack) design is formed with the arms "floating" above the blue ground.
With those features taken together I think the weight could be a Salvador item - possibly - maybe.
-
Do you really think Salvador would have made such an inaccurate "flag"?
I normally consider his work to be rather superior. ;D
I was wondering a little about contemprary Caithness, but the base and again the inaccuracy of the representaion put me right off.
The Caithness ones I've seen in Crieff were much more accurate, although still not quite right, but enough to do for "bread and butter" bits.

Perhaps "finesse" would be a better word to describe his work?
I do think his work stands out from the others, but pwts are not my thing at all.
This just doesn't look good enough for Salvador, (or any Ysart, I'm afraid) to me.
But I'll keep quiet and leave it to the rest of you. ;D
You all know far more than I do about both weights and Ysarts.

Sue lots of ysart weights are what I would call untidy heres an example of ysart brothers that's far from perfect set up
-
Is that Salvador's work? :)
My guts are normally not too bad at recognising his vases. ;)
Weights are another matter entirely, I can just about get "Scottish-ish". :-[

its an ysart brothers weight and you said that the union jack weight wasn't good enough to be of any of the ysarts work = (or any Ysart, I'm afraid) so I posted a pic of that last weight to prove a lot of their stuff was untidy aswell as well done

Aah. I get it now. I can be slow to connect things, especially if there are more than two of them.
That one is a lot more complicated than the one posted, there is more to go wrong with it.
But yes, it's... a bit ropey.
But the original one doesn't even resemble "the flag" (if that is what is supposed to be).
It's not that it's gone wrong, it just is wrong.
I'll shut up. I don't think it's Ysart, I think it's something fairly recent. But I get lots of stuff wrong, including stuff in my own area. :)
I'm always happy to be corrected.
