Title: Sabino advertising plaque
Post by: chilternhills on January 16, 2018, 12:34:38 PM
I bought this plaque for the museum. It is in clear glass, with beveled edges, 20.3 x 12.1 cm. The lettering is frosted on the back. I am not sure if it is acid etched or sandblasted, but the lettering is slightly lower than the surface glass. Is this an original 1930s one or were they reproduced later? Thanks for advice.

By the way, I bought a rather nifty LED light box, A4 in size and just 5 mm thick to display the plaque. Not yet tried it out, but I hope it looks good.

Not too sure about this one: while the style looks very deco, the piece looks quite clean and lacking in wear. I don't recall seeing this in Decelle.

The wording is also inconsistent with the older Sabino print ads. that I have copies of. These tend to say: 'SABINO MAITRE VERRIER' or 'VERRERIE D'ART'.  Therefore my guess is that this is may be a newer piece, maybe from the US owners/ distributors. Also, the fact that it appears to be just regular plate glass with an etched design means it could have been made anywhere -- maybe a dealer had it commissioned for a shop display or similar. of course I could be wrong. The greenish tint might be a sign that it's older as I've seen other illuminated plate glass displays from the thirties that have a similar tint.

it might be worth getting in touch with the current 'Sabino Crystal Co.' to see if they can add anything.

I did some research on this. I found a dealer that specializes in advertising material. They had several examples of Sabino adverts from the 1920s. The wording varied between 'Verreries D'Art' and 'Verrier D'Art'. Various fonts were also used for 'Sabino' and the accompanying 'Verreries D'Art' and 'Verrier D'Art'. Examples of where 'Sabino' and 'Verrier D'Art' coincide, and where the same fonts are use as in my plaque, date from 1928 and 1929. There is a variation in the font used for 'Sabino' that dates to 1926.

By the way, here is what I have done for the museum exhibit. It consists of an outside frame, hardwood panel cut out to form the frame for the plaque, cardboard at the back to hold the plaque in place, and an LED light box. Here are some pictures. It looks great! The button at the bottom right allows three brightness levels as well as off.
