Title: Bagley "Whitby"
Post by: theElench on February 05, 2018, 11:41:41 AM
A picture of my short candlesticks from the "Whitby" set in clear blue.  All the pictures on the file are green so please add if you want to.  These also glow green under UV, not strongly enough for me to take a photo that shows the effect with my rather basic camera.  If "Uranium blue" is of interest is there a way I could strengthen the glow or enhance the picture to show it better?

Hope this is of use , Dave.

It's not uranium blue: a weak glow is manganese decoloriser, which is often found in coloured as well as clear glass.

Thankyou for that, I thought a weak glow just meant there was less Uranium.

Decolouriser is like bleach for glass?  To make it clear before adding a colour, so everything made from it comes out the same shade?

A lot of the sand (except the very expensive sand) used in glass making contains small quantities of iron, which causes a greenish colour in the glass (think old-fashioned coke bottles). Adding manganese is one way of getting rid of this green tint

A nice find, they seem quite elusive and expensive when they do appear.
