Title: Sowerby candlestick?
Post by: thewingedsphinx on April 14, 2018, 07:22:41 AM
Hi,
I would be be very grateful for views on this candle stick, is this Sowerby?, as it has no makers mark. There are also some pictures of the same pattern “Cherub and Urn” in the glass gallery. Does this have a pattern number.
Thanks in advance Mike

If it is Sowerby, the nearest pattern that I can compare it with is pattern 1196.  I attach the Sowerby pattern book illustration (shown on page 12 of pattern book XI of 1885) and the corresponding design representation for Sowerby RD 307957 registered 26 February 1877 - Parcel 8 for comparison.

Thanks very much for that Fred. It looks very similar apart from the cherub and urn base, would Sowerby have made these with different themes and would it be usual for them not to have the makers mark?
Thanks Mike

The plain square rim to the top is different too. I would be dubious about giving the candlestick a firm Sowerby attribution at the moment.
