Title: Christmas Tree Lamp-work paperweight ? Caithness
Post by: Alsretro on April 22, 2018, 01:28:33 PM
This will be on Ebay as from this evening. Polished flat to the base, this weighs just over 1.12kg, measuring 4 1/2ins high and around 3 3/4ins at its widest. I'm pretty sure it is Caithness but more than happy to be corrected. :D

I think it is Chinese.

Similar ones, using powdered glass rather than true overlay technique, were certainly produced back in 1999/2000.

I have checked the Chinese catalogue I have that shows these items and the colours and making match for all parts including the multi-colour tree inside. There were two sizes (but actual size is not stated) and they had "typical" Chinese three-footed, pierced wooden stands as well.

Ach well. Would be very grateful if you could email me an image from the catalogue. Maybe I was just being too hopeful but as it says on the listing, the same source as some quality Whitefriars and Caithness weights in the past and the the outline and measurements are akin to some Caithness weights such as this https://www.jamespirie.com/brands/caithness/limited-edition-paperweights/woodland-seasons-winter.html (https://www.jamespirie.com/brands/caithness/limited-edition-paperweights/woodland-seasons-winter.html) Thanks again for the advice.

Three reference photos sent via email.

Thanks for this KevinH. Listing amended to make clear what this is and as I've said in my message - I wonder if this should be in the Paperweights section for the information of a wider audience? There was no sign of this weight on any searches I did. With dimensions and general style very similar to some Caithness weights, I doubt I'd be the only person to think they'd done better than they had but maybe not :D

:) If it's any consolation, I didn't think to correct Caihness, it looked good enough to me.  ::)
All the cutting (including the round the body bits) is not inconsistent, the style is not inconsistent.
I didn't enlarge the blow-ups to look at the details better until Kev spoke up, and I think that is where it falls down. The trunk of the tree is not neat, and the branches are not "tight" enough, and the bubbles around it aren't neat enough either.

Phew Sue but I agree - the more I've looked at it - especially the tree - but that rule I've gone by of putting things down with a matt base whereas the polishing on this one - just shows to go. I'm leaving it up for sale but if it doesn't go, I do like how it is when under-lit and it would certainly brighten a dark corner come Christmas :D

The quality of glass from China is really increasing.
And a nice bit of glass is always a nice bit of glass, no matter who made it or where it comes from.
It does appear to be a bit "Caithness-inspired". ;D

The forum description for Market Place includes: "To be fair to all members, posts offering items for sale in other forums will be moved here even if the post includes an ID request."

When ID is uncertain, it is best to ask for the help within the relevant forum before putting the item up for sale.

I'm curious about your pics, Alastair.
What is it you do with them that allows the first blow up from the thumbnail, to blow up more?
I get a + sign that appears and hovers over it. It's a wonderful feature.  :)

I'm curious too Sue as I've no idea how that happens :D I use a Mac and most times I just use something called Preview to re-size them. Magic must happen that I have no control over :D
As to KevH's point - I wasn't meaning the main paperweights bit for my benefit. Anyone else seeing a similar weight is maybe more likely to be pre-warned if info was in that section. Maybe it's only me but prior to posting this - I don't know the last time I looked at Market Place whereas I fairly regularly look at the Paperweights section. Was just a thought

Why don't you just condense all the info in a new thread in paperweights without the for sale bit...

That would save a moderator from having to edit and work behind the scenes to get around the market place rule to transfer the information, which I agree is very useful Alastair.  :)

Mac... a plastic raincoat?

Christine and Sue - my understanding was anything up for sale whether that's made clear or not, should be in this bit. Yes - when the auction is over whether or not it sells, I could do that. Market place posts get deleted after some time I think? Would be a shame to not have the info in this thread available for future reference.
Sue - favourite bit of childhood holidays was the excitement of getting a new Pacamac when it invariably rained on day 1. The rest of the holiday could be spent trying to re-pack it into its wee pouch :D

You can have two posts on the same thing as long as the one NOT in the marketplace doesn't mention that it's for sale

I remember them.  ;D
Along with the paper underpants that were the fashionable gimmick at the time. No laundry, just throw them away. Mother thought they'd be useful for camping.
They were not remotely practical for a child bouncing on a trampoline.  ::)

That was not the pair that came wrapped around my copy of Alice Cooper's "School's Out", although I was made to use those ones too.
We had no idea they'd be worth anything later.  :'(

Christine - thanks and I'll get that done :D
Sue - ok :D
