Title: Cambridge glass swans
Post by: Lustrousstone on August 07, 2006, 08:35:41 PM
I have three swans, all unmarked. Two identical ones in green uranium glass and a smaller clear glass one. I am fairly confident that the clear one is Cambrige Glass and I think the green ones are Cambridge. The feathers and general format look OK. It's their feet that have me wondering. Has anyone got good pictures of Cambridge swans that can give me a posive ID.  The  pictures that might be helpful on the web are B&W and not very clear.

The green ones have ground bases. Click to enlarge

Can you please give the sizes?  Cambridge made several different swan dishes in a variety of sizes.

Oops  Sorry Connie. The sizes are within the Cambridge range, I've checked. The green one is about 4.25 inches breast to tip of tail and the clear one is 3 inches breast to tip of tail. The clear one has sticky out feet and the green one moulded in feet.

IMHO - Neither are Cambridge but I far from an expert.

The green one is a problem because of the feet.  In my books all sizes of the swans have molded feet that project past the body.

The clear one bothers me also because of the distance from the tip of the wing to the tip of the tail.  On your clear swan, the wing appears to project much farther back than any of the Cambridge swans.  But this could be an optical illusion due to the camera angle.  Is the 1st picture a straight on side shot? If not take on with with a full side profile and straight on, not with the camera pointing down.

I struggled photographing these. In the clear swan, his tail protrudes furthest, then his feet, then his wings. I'll try another pic tomorrow.

A couple images of Cambridge swans:

Hard to judge whether yours are actually Cambridge, as some of them have been reproduced.  I would guess the green ones aren't.  The smaller body feathers don't look right.  Then there's the overall shape, but I don't know how much that varied - did Cambridge have swans in different positions?

Just for fun, a photo of a swan punch bowl mold I took at the Cambridge Museum:

I think the clear one may be Cambridge, he certainly seems to match, he's also unlikely to be a repro over here in the UK. But the green one - no idea, I've only ever found two - not even a picture to match - but they are/were both mine
