Title: Information re Steuben "snail" bowls please.
Post by: Anne E.B. on May 16, 2018, 02:41:36 PM
Can anyone tell me if Steuben always sign their "snail" bowls please?  I have what I think could possibly be one, except that it is unsigned and it is in a smokey brown colour.
It could of course be a 'copy'.  So if not Steuben, then any ideas who made similar bowls?
Will post pics. later.
TIA ;)

I think this is a most likely a reproduction.  After further searches the walls look to be thinner on mine and the snail handle doesn't appear to extend downwards as much as the Steuben ones.
Its still a very lovely well made bowl who ever made it though.

:) If that is the case, then you can use it daily without worrying too much.

I'm sure it would encourage me to eat more nuts if I was using that instead of my current unattractive soup plate. ;)

I will use this in future for my walnuts.  A step up from just helping myself from the packet ;D

Just back to my original question, is Steuben glass always marked/signed please?

As far as I know Steuben only made crystal for the last 20+ years unless it was a Steuben import after they were sold a few years ago and before they closed. Schottenstein's owned them for a few years and did some different sort of things during that time trying to keep it afloat.

You might find something in one of the Steuben catalogues on CMOG https://www.cmog.org/research/library-search/Steuben%20pdf (https://www.cmog.org/research/library-search/Steuben%20pdf)

Many thanks folks :)
I've checked out the link given :-*, and there is in fact a "smoke olive dish" on page 41 of their catalogue, described as "Colourless and transparent smokey grey glass; blown, hot worked, applied. Transparent smokey grey dish with one applied colourless scroll handle. Design 9674". This has an engraved base.
I initially thought mine was smoke brown, but it is grey.  The handle on mine is smoke grey unlike the Steuben catalogue one, which if I read it correctly, is clear, and the dimensions are different too.

Some fabulous glass in the catalogue.
