Title: Interesting Oblong/Egg Coloured Glass Field Find near Penicuik, Midlothian
Post by: pwpenman on July 02, 2018, 11:23:42 AM
Hello all, newbie here and found an interesting glass oblong/egg internal blue swirl object when walking in a field near Penicuik in Midlothian.

Object about 5" in length, 3" wide.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

What an odd thing to find in a field. Any field.
It looks like a reasonably modern egg-shaped paperweight from a studio to me, possibly with an acid etched surface, which looks as if it might be something called corroso.
I can't think of any maker it might be.
It doesn't appear, (to me at any rate), to be connected to any glassmakers from around this area that I know of. It's the wrong sort of blue and the wrong style for John Airlie of Kirkhill, it looks much more recent (and also very unlike) anything from Juniper Green and Helen Munroe-Turner, which would have been from around the '70s.
I really cannot think how it might have ended up in a field.  ;D
I don't recognise it, so it wasn't me who left it there.
Welcome! :)

Many thanks for your response chopin-liszt. There have been old finds found in this field before near the Ravensneuk Castle remains. The find was found with an area of plowed stones with other pieces of pottery and tile at the surface.

Again thanks for your response. Cheers Paul

I got dragged up in Edinburgh myself, I don't know the exact bits you're talking about but I know the general envions and have wandered around the countryside (picking interesting things up, as you do) all my life.
I just find it strange that something which looks so recent (to me) was in a field especially with stuff that might be a good bit older.  :)
Paperwights are not my thing, I'm only speculating here!

Sometimes these egg shaped ones are a lot older - and they're known as hand-coolers.
I don't know the origin of that; if it's correct or if it's an urban myth put about by sellers.

Again thanks for your response chopin-liszt. The item has no flat areas and feels robust/heavy when held in the hand with minor chips considering that the field has probably been plowed each year. There was no other general junk ect in the field when found and doesn't appear to have used as a tipping area. If there was junk I would probably have thought nothing of it and not posted.

Again many thanks for your response and have a good one Paul.
