Title: Molineaux Webb plate pattern 548
Post by: neilh on July 08, 2018, 03:05:42 PM
Recently I found a pair of Molineaux Webb plates, pattern 548 in the book. They have the same plate design as pattern 32, only the rim and stippling is different. These 548 plates came as a pair, and there was quite a lot of variation between them, one weighed about a third more than the other, and the lighter plate was notably warped, with the centre of the plate looking like it had been pulled upwards a little.

I've now seen six Molineaux Webb plates of this size, approx 8in diameter. Three examples of pattern 4, one example of pattern 32, and two of pattern 548.

Three of these six had a deeper bowl shape (4,4,32), and three had a shallow plate shape (4,548,548). The three bowls were all stippled and the three plates were not. I would like some more evidence to come in, but it is suggestive that only the deeper bowls were stippled in these early pressed plate designs.
