Title: Tadpole Vase ID?
Post by: The Glass Staircase on November 27, 2018, 02:06:31 PM
Hi All,

I picked up this 'tadpole' vase yesterday and expected it to be either czech or italian but I can't seem to find anything similar when googling, anyone any ideas? It doesn't look very old and has a polished broken pontil mark (which made me think murano) not sure though.

It measures 10.5 cm / just over 4 inches high and 12.5 cm / just under 5 inches diameter

A thousand thank you's ,

Adam

Hello Adam,

Did you get anywhere with this piece?  If not, please post a picture like The first one but against a white background. The glass itself looks interesting.  First thought was Glory Art Glass on Isle of Wight, but I haven't seen anything with those applied trails.  Have posted a link below for reference

Will keep yours in mind while I'm searching for mine!

Hello Cat,

No still searching for a maker I'm afraid. I've attached two more photos but the quality after resizing them has dipped dramatically so I apologise in advance.

Best,

Adam

Thanks for those.  The trails look like snakes.....the effect in the glass looks like scales.

Could I put you to one last request for a picture of the body of the glass with a piece of white paper inside the glass......I think it should show us the glass more clearly.

I'm intrigued!

Here's another photo Cat, it was hard to get a normal sheet of paper inside the vase with it having such a tight opening so I used white tissue paper instead.

Best,

Adam

What shows with the paper inside is what I suspected - the green colour comes from a clear gather having been rolled in powdered green enamel to create the colour.
I've seen this being done in practice at IoWSG.
But I do not think this is IoWSG. It does look as if the Mdina "side stripe" design might have been an inspiration behind this. ;D

The way the green colour has been made is similar to a green and red pear I have which has stumped me too

I think it's a fairly common way to create a coloured vessel. Caithness does it too.  :)

Ok that's good to know as I thought it could be Caithness (the pear I mean not the vase) :)

I don't think Caithness has made pears. Anita Pate has, but annoyingly I can't find any examples. It was a long time ago and she's learned and developed and is doing much more sophisticated stuff now.

Ok thanks for the information. I'll have to post it in here at some point and maybe someone will recognise it.

I've done a bit more searching and I've made a howling big booboo!
I didn't mean Anita Pate at all. I meant Adrienne McStay.
Both are members of the Scottish Glass Society and I've seen their work at the Exhibitions over the years.
