Title: Art Glass identification for newbie please
Post by: chrisd58 on January 26, 2019, 05:27:32 PM
A recent acquisition, this small squat vase has no labels or identification marks, so it is perhaps a big ask that someone might recognise it and assist in identifying it. Diameter approx 5" and height 3".
Thank you for looking and any contributions/advice.

Chris

This may actually be an oil lamp, not a vase. It may be missing  the wick holder. I have an oil lamp which is very similar. Try searching for similar oil lamps.

Thank you. I had wondered about it being a candleholder but not considered an oil lamp - I suppose I expected a handle of some sort. Do you think it's handblown/handmade or just a mass produced item? The machined rim made me think the former but now I'm not so sure. Thanks again for you comment.

Hand blown and mass produced are not mutually exclusive. I do think it is hand blown. Both mass produced and small lot or unique studio pieces commonly have ground surfaces. Here are a couple of images of a roughly similar oil lamp made by Roger Vines that were pretty widely produced. Also a link to an ebay auction which shows another one with a wick in it and a third example on Collectors Weekly. A little more work was done on these to give them a small pedestal base.

The design on the piece looks very like one from Mtarfa, but I suspect the neck has had an accident and been cut down. Mtarfa should have heat finished rims.

Here is a link to some information about Mtarfa Glass and some examples.

Is the bottom on your piece ground flat? Can't tell from you image.

There is only one example of this colourway on that site, a cylinder and it's not the most typical of pieces.
They are normally busier, and they do have splodges. While many Mtarfa bits are ground to a satinated (not polished) sort of flat, some may end up with different styles, depending on the shape of the piece in question.

(eta) I've found some pics of the bit I have.

I'm wondering if it might just be an atomiser base without its fitting/bulb?  I have a couple with similar necks both without their fittings. A Royal Brierley Studio one here https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,48299.0.html and the (probably Chinese) unmarked one below.  The RB one is 4" diameter and the unknown one a little smaller at 3½" diameter.
