Title: is this Murano ?
Post by: paulnot on March 17, 2019, 05:24:17 PM
Hi

Apologies - but I am new to glass collecting. Can you please tell me if this is Murano and who the maker was?.. I picked it up in a flea market... it measures 27cm x 12 (at widest point).

It may not show in the main photograph, but there is another twist (2 strand) within the other one (see last photograph)

Also, any idea of the age ?

What ever it is..it is stunning (at least, to me!)
any help appreciated!

Thanks
Paul

It may have been damaged and repaired, it looks like this Lucio Gaspari design for Salviati minus the top section:

Hi John

Many thanks for the excellent information.

Inevitably I now have another question!.   If it had been damaged in the studio would it have been immediately destroyed?... or would they have cut it down and then sold it?       Or do you think it was sold as whole, damaged by an owner and then cut down ?

Just trying to understand its life!

thanks again - much appreciated.

Paul

No idea what Salviati's policy would have been when it came to seconds or damaged items. I sold my only crystal ball on the weekend so can't answer your second question either! :D

If I had owned it and broken the top off I would have had it ground and polished in the same way, it is still a fine piece of glass, given finding another would be very hard and likely cost thousands I think it would be well worth keeping.

Hi John,

I have emailed Salviati for info about this (assuming they have some sort of archives etc) - but not really expecting a reply ... will info you if I ever get one..

As for the glass....definitely keeping it... only place it is going is onto a very secure shelf..

thanks again
