Title: Please ID this odd paperweight. ID = Midsummer Glass.
Post by: Chatty Corner on April 21, 2019, 04:53:35 PM
This weight has no ID marks, but it is reminiscent of ornaments I remember seeing in people's homes in the late 60s and early 70s. Or maybe on a futuristic TV programme such as UFO.
This is a dome-shaped paperweight, which looks vaguely Scandinavian, not British. The glass is almost completely clear, the yellow colour you may see comes from a paper disc stuck onto its base. The very elegant design is a few bubbles and a swirl of something.
I would be very grateful if anyone could help with an ID  :D

Here is a another picture, that perhaps gives a better impression. As I said, it is completely clear, which makes me think it predates the early Seventies boom of Caithness paperweights.

Hi there,

Welcome to the GMB.

Without markings those weight are really difficult to identify. Quite a lot of abstract paperweights have been made since the 1960s (the decade that saw the first abstract paperweights at Caithness) and from so many sources... I do not recognise this design at all.

Can you tell us what the base look like or even better post a picture of it? Even though there are no markings, the 'look' of the base can be informative.

Thank you for replying: Here is a picture of its base (just a green disc of paper, that feels a bit like felt).

Answering my own question! :) I have worked out that this weight was made by Midsummer Glass in Cambridge in the mid-eighties. There is a picture of a very similar one in Pat Reilly's book "Paperweights". So it seems my rather plain weight could be fairly rare !

Hi Chatty Corner, well done on finding the maker of this weight. Pat Reilly's book gives an excellent covergae of many types of weight and yet it is often overkooked (by me) for ID research.  :)
