Title: Need help to identify this art glass vase
Post by: jingyel on May 18, 2019, 04:50:24 PM
Hello Everyone,

I just bought a art glass vase from local auction. It has signature on the bottom.

I wonder if you could help me to identify the artist or studio who made this beautiful piece.
Thank you for the help.

Hi jingyel,

Please try a tip we like to pass on about hard-to-read signatures:
1. Apply a small amount of talc (or simillar) to the area of the signature
2. Smooth out the talc with a dry finger
3. Gently blow or wipe off any talc remaning on the surface
4. Take another photo of the now clear-to-read signature area
 :)

Or cinnamon or cocoa powder.  :)
Could the signature read Stan Melis?
I can kind of make Melis out.

The first letter looks more like a B to me

Yes, sort of, but there isn't a glassmaker who has B as the first initial to Melis, but there is a Stan. ;D
And I don't think this style of work would be incompatible with Australian Studio Glass.
Can you try the powder trick to help bring the marks up? :)

I don't think Stan Melis, Sue. The style looks wrong and I cannot see his sig there either. Good of you to be thinking of Oz glass though.

Are there a year 2001?
Looks like it in the third picture, if so maybe easier to narrow it in.

:-[ I wasn't absolutely sure about the style, Trevor, but I never forget Australian glass.  ;D

Yes it does show 2001. So may be a art work from the young generation?

I have taken the liberty of making copies of the images and cropping, rotating and tweaking. These images can be removed by a moderator on request at any time.

Are any of these any better for deciphering? (I do not see the "2001" as mentioned above.)

Now, my imagination is trying to make Bertil Vallien out of it.
Perhaps I ought to have a lie down. ;D

I wonder why they signed on the body not the base....... I can't think of any of my pieces that are signed into the finish unless the base is very small.

I think American makers sometimes sign around the body of the piece at the bottom?
