Hi,this pice is 12cm ht with engraved ferns,wine cooler ??There's no Rd numbers so a hopeful post just in case someone may know the maker,Thanks.

This the first time that I have seen one of these in clear glass (but the fern engraving is typical found on clear glass pieces from the 1870s through to the 1890).
The piece normally has a lid with a knob in the shape of a military shako helmet (which is obviously in keeping with the theme of the base as a military drum).
Here are some photos of the complete jar in other colours. All are unmarked, and I know of no positive attribution so far (though all the colours are similar to those found in Greener pieces from about the same era).

Thanks so much Fred that's really interesting,hopefully one day I'll come across one with a damaged body and an ok lid.The only difference I can see is mine has a toothed rim and the ledge to hold the rim is deeper and very thin,if anybody comes across a lid don't hesitate to contact me ,there could be a pint in it for you!

Just to add, the rope on the ones you show are ten chords long and mine has 18,so it maybe the next size up?

The ones Fred shows are 8cm tall (without the lid) so if yours is 12cm it is definitely larger.
Diameter on Fred's is 8.5cm.

I saw this thread the other day so I went rummaging in dads cabinets today. We have the larger one, probably a biscuit barrel the smaller ones are probably mustard or condiment pots. This maybe?? A Sowerby piece the two pieces in picture 3 have the Sowerby trademark 1875 and the fern etching looks extremely similar however the drum is unmarked.

Just resurrecting this thread rather than start a new one. I am interested in readers opinions on the possible maker of these drum containers, especially as I have another new colour and some comments on differences between patterns that may indicate production over some time. I have pulled together all the colours from previous posts and added some more of my own which help illustrate the differences in pattern. This post only refers to the "shako" drum pots - I have never seen any crossed drumsticks or other variations.
SIZE The picture of the three drum pots are my own purchases. It clearly shows that there are two sizes. The "normal" 11cm high small pot and the rarer(?) larger 16cm high pot. Measurement from base to top of shako.
COLOUR These pots were produced in a range of colours as shown in the images. The similarity between my large jade/blue pot and some Edward Moore colours (see image of sugar bowl courtesy of Heartofglass.uk. I have to say that my large pot is semi-translucent in places whereas I believe the Moore blue is opaque.
PATTERN I thought this was an easy distinction when I started but each of my three are different. The white one is plain top and underside of lid, plain base. The black one is swirled top of lid, ridged underside of lid, plain base whilst the large pot is swirled lid, ridged underside of lid and swirled base. In addition, the shako finial is different on the small pots as the decorative band hangs down from the top whilst the large pot it is around the brim.
My own feeling is that the plain white is the earliest design, with embellishments being added over time and the large pot is the latest sue to its colour, pattern and the translucent nature of the glass.
