Title: Heavy crystal pedestal bowl - pattern identification - ID = Stuart Crystal

Beautiful quality but unmarked, possibly due to an iron red inclusion in glass on the base.  Rings like a bell - it has a lovely long, deep, tone.

Heavy (still no scales).  Approx. 20cm dia., by 13cm high.  Polished pontil.

I think it is a moulded design, but it would have needed an expensive mould as it has very fine detail.....I can get my nail into each vertical line and the thin banding.  Possibly moulded and cut.  I think the frosted finish on the alternate fans must also have been done afterwards.

The design appears to me to be a transitional one, between 1920 and 1930s.

I think it's an acid etch not a mould

It has raised texture on the borders of the fans, and the infil on the non frosted fans and rectangles.  I can get my nail in The circles and leaves.  The frosted fans may well be acid etched, but the design isn't like any acid etching I have seen before......can you point me to some examples please......it looks like I still have more to learn!

The shape looks identical......how about the size?  I have looked at all Stuart crystal drinking glass patterns several times this week, and not seen anything like it, but they may have just made bowls in this one.  I will follow it up tomorrow 💤

My thought is Stuart Crystal - as Anne suggests.  As to why it got decorated with the red inclusion.  Perhaps a trainee engraver simply used it as a practice piece and was then allowed to keep it.

Christine, thank you for the information.  I only knew about the resist method for acid etching and hadn't appreciated such fine work could be done with acid and a needle.  The bird glass is just lovely, it must have taken a long time to do all that detail.

Ross, I hadn't considered an apprentice piece.  I did find the same body but with a different design, and it has the 1927+ Stuart Mark.

I see from Ivo Haanstra's glass marks book that Pre 1927 Stuart was unmarked.  However, I have yet to pin down a date for mine.  I am pretty sure this is Stuart Crystal, based on the quality and everything else on this thread. 

Thank you all for your help.  I'm off to try and find a YouTube video of needle acid etching!
