Title: Mdina Glass cylindrical vase
Post by: newbie on August 22, 2019, 04:39:42 PM
This cylindrical by Mdina Glass in Malta is approx. 22.5cm high and 7.5cm diameter. Any information on the piece such as approximate dating, identification of the signature and details on the design would also be helpful.

Thanks.

It's a pattern called Ming, but an unusual and possibly early version, given it is upright stripes.
The marks on the base were made by Marie, Boffo's niece who worked in the packaging department and made some of the "artist marks" on pieces deemed to be good enough to require one.
It's slightly bigger than the more normal exectution of this cylinder shape, but again, possibly because it is an early piece.
Does it have a round pontil mark on the base? I can't really make out how it was finished off from that very direct photograph.  :)

Thank you for the very informative reply. I am attaching two more photos to (hopefully) better show the base.

The polished round pontil mark means is it quite early, as I suspected - while Boffo was still there.
They stopped finishing off that way when he left.
Cylinders with "all upright stripes" are unusual. :)

I've been up and down ladders checking heights of cylinders.  ;D
I got a bit worried about yours being 22.5cm tall - it's taller than the normal cylinder size of ~ 20cm.
There are early small ones, and early big ones.
But yours is just a big normal size - and still a very early one. The unusual size just adds weight to it being very early. :)
The very big ones are ~ 27cm tall, the small ones ~17cm.
