Title: Small blue enamelled vase, Webb? Barbe?
Post by: thewingedsphinx on September 03, 2019, 07:50:58 PM
I would be very grateful for some help identifying this small blue enamelled pot with gold petals and flowers. I’m having difficulty describing it let alone identifying it. It’s quite thick in the base but thin rim. No makers mark. Thanks Mike

Hi Mike.  I can't make the rim out very clearly.....do you think it might have had a lid?  Have you considered Moser?  It's very pretty.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply, I have a pair, I don't think they had lids as the rims are quite thin and don't appear as if they were made for a lid but the base is quite thick so the are quite heavy.  I think they are to small for matchstick holders and not the shape of a salt. They are very well decorated with thick enamel.
Thanks Mike

For an interesting discussion on attributions to Moser (3 pages) on various small items in gilded & raised enamel decoration on pale blue opaline click here (https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,44806.msg249763.html#msg249763) (goes to a thread from Nov 21 2011.

In that thread I mention my query to the owners of the Great Glass site, where at the time they showed various pieces which were very similar to some that I had. I had noted that almost every eBay seller seemingly ID'd such items as "Moser" but some hesitated and went for "French or Italian".

I think I may have misread the measurement - thought it was 5" but, given your comments about matches and salt, I suspect it was 5cm/2"?

I have seen small pieces like this described as miniature vases, or cabinet pieces, so they may not have any practical purpose.  What do you think about toothpick holders?

Thanks for the links Kevin, the blue enamelled items are definitely the closest I have come across. I am not very familiar with Moser so will investigate further. I thought they were too small for toothpick holders but now because of their weight think that is exactly what they are. 5cm high they won’t fall over with toothpicks because there heavy little beauties. Cheers Mike

The quality of the enamelling doesn't look good enough for Moser to me but I would say it was Bohemian because of the yellow enamel under the gilding (there should be gilding over the yellow) and the cut rim.
