Title: Can anyone help with this Pressed Gilded Vase - Borske? Japan?
Post by: seanduxbury on September 26, 2019, 05:31:02 PM
Hi All.  Hoping that someone may have seen this shape before - a tall vase with gilded hoops of various widths running from top to bottom.  Pressed glass as far as I can tell.  It measures 30 cm tall x 10 cm in diameter at the widest part (rim) and weighs 750 gms.  I've seen examples of this type of gilding on both Borske and Japanese glass but not the shape.  No doubt there are other examples that have been seen from other countries/makers.  Any help would be much appreciated.

20thcenturyglass have similar pieces in their unidentified section, but say they are thought to be Romanian.  Do you think 1950s?

I was thinking that sort of date but (and this is a big but) the gilding shows only slight signs of wear so I'm not sure how much it's been handled.  I've had a look at the pieces in 20th Century Glass and agree the banding looks similar but they are against coloured glass rather than clear glass.  Also the glass 'hoops' seem more rounded than the one I've found.  But in saying that I've also had pieces that I thought to be Murano only to discover later (once I found an example with a label) that were Romanian.  So this piece could easily be Romanian.
