Title: Ernest Gordon coloured vase
Post by: Scott13 on October 11, 2019, 08:18:59 AM

Hi,
Paul’s post ‘ Ernest Gordon Afors Stem Vase ‘ got me thinking about this one.

The GH I understand indicates coloured and clear glass (Jonas) - which this one is.
Can I assume the number 553 is its pattern number?
I suppose what I’m trying to find out is whether this series had a name.

It’s about 15cm ( 6”) high and has a light grey blue colour

I really like its simple but effective design.

Many thanks for looking  :)

Scott

Hi,
Just a thought- could the 553 be a date - 1955.03 - and not the pattern number?

According to Miller's Glass Fact File A-Z (Ivo Haanstra) the signature format is Åfors + model + designer so I think the 553 is the model (pattern) no. Unfortunately that number seems to postdate the only Åfors catalogues I've found online.

Hi Anne,
I really appreciate your help.
I thought it might be a model number, but it’s good to have it confirmed.
Many thanks  :)

 Hi,
Had a look at the online catalogues downloaded by kerstinfroberg - as expected, nothing there remotely like mine  -
but as regards to the glass shown all I can say is “wow” :o

Those are the ones I checked too Scott. There's some super designs there for sure.

Yep, 553 is the pattern number.
Afors numbering can be "variable" - I've a number of these of the same size, but signed GH 555.
In this style the numbers run from 553 to 556 (or possibly 7)of various sizes, including a candlestick, all either in smoke/grey or steel blue.

Of all the bits of Afors, these seem to have the most variety in numbering, my guess is that they looked very similar, and there was variation in sizes from the blowing, and whoever was etching got confused a lot !

They come up quite often on Ebay if you want to collect some of the other sizes..
