Title: Lead Crystal Glass Stand With Prunt's & Folded Foot :)
Post by: LEGSY on October 29, 2019, 08:15:37 PM
Like the quality of this item although it has been damaged somebody
re-glued the top section back as it got damaged glad they did as it
looks well nice with a glass engraved ball vase i have sat in the top.
The foot has been folded and the terminations have prunts at near
Top any body know what it may have been used for? Maybe for like
i am using it for displaying ball shape vases? Base has a good amount
of wear i would think Victorian maybe...date wise.
Thank you :)

most unusual - not a clue as to purpose - sorry.              Traditionally, foot rims on thin glass pieces were strengthened by folding the rim - likewise top rims on some pieces too.     I don't know that Brits. were much into folding feet - outside of some C18 drinking glasses  -  and the only source I can think of easily were the Murano folk, who did so as a result of their keenness in making impossibly thin glass.

fingers crossed someone will have the answer for you.

And the award for "weirdest item of the week" goes to .........Legsy 🏆

Not sure what the actual size is, but I have a lovely rock crystal ball (yes, in one of the boxes!) that might display quite nicely on it......

would be interesting to know the height.            the rigaree trailing goes back a long way - well into the C19 - but of course things get copied which confuses us.         LEGSY says this is lead crystal, which if true might rule out the Murano suggestion - does this thing ring if flicked - not all clear glass contains lead:)

Just an idea: you often see silver holding something in glass, why not opposit glass holding a silver beeker and that got lost

 :)
Thank you sorry for my delay in reply its
dimensions are 6 3/4" tall the base or foot has a diameter of 5 1/2"
the top section to hold  ??? has a diameter of 4 1/4" external and 3 1/4" internal
quite exact measurements on the top must be too hold something. The top ring is cylindrical
in shape however this has been flattened on the top must be to hold something steady..
The picture below is with the ball vase i purchased it with it has a lovely swan engraved
on thin glass signed by Jens Leek i think he worked for Kosta. Don't think
it belong's with it but looks all right for my room :)

I think it's a plate, dish or bowl stand similar to that in the photos below.

What a great way to share glass.  Tried to add a link to this thread for the guy who posted the video, but I don't have a YouTube or google login.

 :D
Thanks really nice pieces i have also recently seen a similar example which had a sort of grecian urn glass bottle
in the circle on the top so i guess it maybe a multi purpose use item, I agree with the chap on the video that it is not
as early as it looks from the design :)

These could be amphora stands.
