Title: Mystery Signature on small art nouveau style vase - ID = Ágnes Smetana, Hungary
Post by: Andreadb on November 26, 2019, 10:10:18 AM
Good morning,

I am a new member here. My mum collected many glass items from various periods and geographical origin. She passed away a few years ago and I am now starting to try to understand what is each piece.

Internet is full of resources, but i could not find any info related to the piece shown in the attached pictures. There is a signature on the bottom, but i was not able to find anything similar so far.

Can somebody help me identify this one ? Geographical origin ? Period (probably Art Nouveau) ? Manufacturer ?

Thank you !!

This is an unusual one, but I do know the answer.  ;D
Ágnes Smetana
It is modern Hungarian glass. There are images of the artist's work on a website of a specialist in Hungarian glass I know, Prof. Atilla Sik.
This is his website;

And this is the link to the gallery of the work of Ágnes Smetana, her signature is also shown.

It is a beautiful piece you have there. I have admired this artist for some time and have even held some pieces at a fair.

Welcome to the board! :)

Do not worry about it not being "old" or genuine "art nouveau".
It is a very, very high quality piece of contemporary work.
I intend to own a piece myself, some day.  ;D

Thank you for the fast and precise reply !

I was looking at Art Nouveau because most of the large collection my mum put together comprises French, Bohemian and Italian glass from that period and Smetana's style on this vase could be interpreted as such...by my untrained eye.

I'll sift through the forum for more info on the many other items I am trying to classify, but I am sure you will see me popping new questions in the coming weeks. I have only opened one box so far and there are many more.  :o

Her work is a tribute to the art nouveau style - and every bit as high quality as you would expect from the best old makers.
Perhaps your Mum liked it purely for the style and quality - and as an example of a modern tribute to what she loved most?
We will look forward to seeing what else you have to ask about. :)
If people don't ask questions, there is no point to us being here because we won't have anything to talk about.  :)

I manage the odd paragraph here and there. It comes from sticking my nose in everywere.  ;D
Having other people such as yourself around here, who can fill in the other paragraphs and turn them into chapters and books helps loads!

You don't forget Agnes Smetana's work, once you've seen it.  ;D
I was a huge fan of the Hungarian work Atilla was promoting. He's been trying to show the world the incredible quality of contemporary Hungarian glass, and I think the world needs to know about it too. 8)
