Title: Uranium pressed glass Bowl and Underplate with bird and flower pattern
Post by: catshome on December 15, 2019, 06:01:24 PM
Bowl 7 3/4" diameter x 1 3/4" high, underplate 9" diameter x 3/4" high.  Really nicely moulded, and the frosting seems to give it a softer glow than my other uranium glass pieces.

I had thought (before I started researching) that these might be by Heinrich Hoffmann, although I cannot find a butterfly mark.  However, I have been unable to find this pattern in the catalogue on Glas-musterbuch.de (fast becoming one of my favourite site).

Found a malachite plate with a similar pattern and butterfly mark, and the tail feathers on the birds are almost identical.

Then spotted this listing on ebay for the bowl with the same pattern, but attributed to Walther & Söhne.

I searched all the Walther & Söhne catalogues on glas-musterbuch.de, but failed to find this pattern.

Have also checked out Pamela's pressed glass site, with no luck - although I did spot the exact clock I sold many years ago, which turned out to be Hoffman!

Only found one other piece with this pattern - not on a selling site - which was described as "possibly Hoffmann".

Any thoughts on date and maker welcomed.

Thank you
Cat

Less of a thought and more of a thunk. ;)
I do fully undestand that the cameo bit on the bottom is very Hoffman like - but the sort of low-relief, very busy moulding on the outside is more reminiscent of American depression stuff - Hazel Atlas and Jeanette sort.
But I'm not sure if the moulding is not too prominent for that.
I only have some clematis stuff, which almost looks like needle etching until you discover it stands proud of the surface.
This has rounded protruberances in the birds, not the thin lines which "draw" the flowers on the Jeanette bits I have. (images here)

The glass is fairly thick on these.  I should have mentioned no UV light was used in the pictures.  They feel more Czech than USA, but I'm not too familiar with all USA glass.  I think I have the jug and glasses to match your bowls, Sue......in a box somewhere!

I wonder if Pukeberg is an option

I also think it may be Pukeberg . I have this plate of a similar colour and appearance I think designed by Jules Venon.

:) I had no idea Pukeberg ever did anything like this!
(hiya Cat! ;) )

My last post is actually a dish but I have some plates the same. Is the design on yours in intaglio? Jules Venon's most well known design is a lion's head on a plate or dish like mine.

Thank you both for the suggestion ...... I've had a good trawl through Pukeberg, which I would never have considered, and I can see similarities.  however, the intaglio to the base on the Venon pieces appears to be much bigger, and I have been unable to find anything with birds.  Those pieces also seem thinner.  Can't rule it in or out completely at the moment.

Hortensja Glass might be another option
