THIS (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-2992) vase came by today and it has THIS (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-2991) label.
So I googled Borocrystal and found THIS (http://www.crystalex.cz/pages-en/companyprofile1.htm) text on the Crystalex site.
Do I read correctly that Borocrystal changed its name in 1974 so this label predates it??? Also, suggestions as to glassworks, designer and period are more than welcome.
-
To me it is not completely clear about the name. It says the name Crystalex was introduced but does not say it replaced Borocrystal. I would want to see this clarified.
-
No clarification necessary. Borocrystal was an integral part of Crystalex and this manufacturing unit was merged into Crystalex national corporation's umbrella in 1974. Clearly laid out in many publications.
Sorry Ivo, can't access the images at the moment, will post more when possible.
Regards,
Marcus

According to modernistglass.com website: "
BOROCRYSTAL only existed between 1948 and 1 January 1953 so this is from the early days after the communist takeover in 1948. Borocrystal was created following the merger of several glass works and 55 decorating shops. In 1953 it merged with Borske Sklarny and Umelecke Sklo to form the Borske Sklo National Corporation. "

Hi emmb,
I am aware of the modernistglass web-site, but the inference that a Borocrystal label on a piece of glass indicates solely 1948-1953 manufacture, is inaccurate. The Borocrystal label was used, as was the brand-name, well into the 1970s, evidenced by repeated advertisements in Czechoslovak Glass Review.
The piece of glass on that site is: http://www.modernistglass.com/glasspieces/view/2206
So, as has been seen before, Borocrystal labels were applied to off-hand glass, as well as glass from the Uzitkove Sklo works, in this case an item made at the Chribska factory.

Hi Sklounion
Thanks very much for the info'!! That reference in the modernistglass website and this thread were practically the only pieces of info that came up when I googled Borocrystal.
I wonder if you can help me out:
I've a pair of goblets which rescued from a mate who said they hated them and were going to throw them out with the rubbish :o - I think they are lovely...cetainly too nice to use. Anyway, thought I'd see if I could find any info on them and googled Borocrystal - amazed to read they may be from as long ago as the the 70's as had always assumed they were only a few years old. Do you know where I could find out some more info on them...is there a site that details what designs where produced when?

Hi emmb,
Not sure that there is such a site.
However, if you can post an image, possibly Jindrich, or myself, may be able to help you further.

Hi SkloUnion
Thanks for offering to help.
Sorry for the delay in replying - bought a new camera and it has taken me some time to sort it out.
I have tried to reply with attached photos but the site does not like my pictures - perhaps they are too large so I shall try emailing them to you directly. Hope that is ok.

Hi emmb,
there´s a help topic on how to post pictures here:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6522.0.html
It would be better to start a new topic about your items, so the threads don´t
get confused. Another help topic here:

Well, it is almost like emmb says. After WWII in 1945 was all glass factories (only small glasshops as Skrdlovice had persisted private for a while)nationalised and Borocrystal n.p grounded, followed by Borské sklo and later Crystalex.
Trademark and label Borocrystal was used, however, also in 60ties and 70ties for pieces from Borske sklo n.p. and also for Borské sklo - Crystalex.
Paper labels at pictures focus me to 70ties. TK = technical control, ČSN = Czechoslovak national standard (at that time everything was standardised in technical norms)

Just out of interest I found this Borske Sklo vase in its original box from the 60's or 70's. The writing on the box is very faded but you can just make out the word Smoke which is the vase colour. Loose inside the box is the Borocrystal label.
