Title: Quality pressed cut glass vase - Czech?
Post by: jonnybrum on January 20, 2020, 07:21:40 PM
Can anyone help ID this heavy quality pressed glass vase?  Initial thoughts are that it might be Czech.

Hi  -  nice vase, and you may well be correct  - also possibly German.          Regret to say I can't see anything in the books so far.

Slightly unsure as to your description  -  is this cut or is it pressed -  it looks to be cut, but clarification appreciated.     thanks.

Thanks for the response.  I thought initially it was pressed but its leaded glass so it could possibly be cut.  I'm not an expert sorry.

thanks  -  are you suggesting lead in view of the 'ring' when flicked?          You're correct insofar as pressed glass doesn't usually have any noticeable lead content, but my opinion would be that it's safer to make your decision based on  …………......…..

one..................….  the sharpness of the decoration - cut glass being fairly sharp to the touch whereas moulded pieces are usually quite smooth.

two …………………….   using a small lens look into the mitres (the recesses of the cutting), and you should be able to see some remains of the grinding marks which show as faint straight lines where the acid, or polishing, didn't remove all of the rough grinding marks.

Your vase looks to have some bevelling around the top rim, plus the rim itself will likely be ground/polished flat  -  this is commonplace on cut glass, but not on pressed pieces.

Hopefully someone will be able to help with definite attribution. :)
