Title: Small bowled, hollow stemmed glass. Cordial?
Post by: Jeffingtons on February 02, 2020, 07:36:33 PM
Slice cut, I think double ogee or funnel bowl, with slice cut petals and a hollow stem. 4" tall, 2" wide (base and bowl). The bowl is very small. Stem is a double knopped air filled stem. Base is both a snapped and polished pontil. This is because the base is so domed the grinding and polishing didn't reach the pontil height.
Wear to the base is less than some of my older glasses but it is there.
75g in weight.

Bowl wise I've seen this style in 1900 Val St Lambert, early Victorian rummers, 1830s Richardson wine glasses so it's not massively helpful in dating the thing.
The stem is surprisingly naive to my eyes in comparison to the bowl.
I'm guessing as it's so small it's a cordial glass of some sort.
Haven't found anything particularly useful in my books yet (though I still have loads to read through).

quote  ...............…   "Base is both a snapped and polished pontil. This is because the base is so domed the grinding and polishing didn't reach the pontil height."

Sorry to sound thick, but is it possible to have both a scar and polished pontil, at the same time? - sounds most improbable, and I think the answer is that I've misunderstood your explanation, so grateful if you will please re-write that part of the description for me.     thanks:)

I could be wrong, but had understood feet became flatter c. 1780, and of course at the same time the scar started to be ground smooth and we begin to see the polished depression in its place.

How does the foot appear  -  is it thin, is the edge smooth and sharp, or thick and slightly irregular.              Apart from agreeing that the bowl size might suggest a cordial possibly, regret I'm now wiser on any other suggestions - sorry.          Let's hope someone else might have more positive thoughts for you. :)

So, the foot isn't domed in the way that glasses with a folded rim are. But it isn't flat. The maker has tried to polish out the pontil scar, but the pontil snap is so deep that the it hasn't been fully ground out, so there's a polished disc with a scar in the centre

thanks  -  I now understand - but none the wiser as to pedigree or age of the glass - other than suggesting it's possibly second half C19  :)          This situation is seen occasionally when for whatever reason the snapping action has as you say caused damage up into the glass, rather than leaving the scar slightly proud of the surface only.    Usually, the damage doesn't penetrate very far into the glass.
