Title: Large old Rummer Goblet 0.5 litre capacity Ideal :)
Post by: LEGSY on April 04, 2020, 04:53:11 PM
I purchased a few glasses online recently and wondered if anyone could give me an idea if i am
in the right ball park on date please , In the picture i have a large glass which has a gadget mark on the base
of the foot and  it has 0.5l underlined hand engraved on the side i thought it maybe from 1920 but could be a bit earlier??
The other glasses are rummers with rough pontil marks which i believe are a fair bit earlier in date due to the gadget on the
large glass Thank you so much for looking :)

the metric capacity you suggest  -  and regret I can't see anything on the bowl  -  would probably indicate a Continental origin  -  Sowerby did some large capacity similar shaped glasses (up to a pint I think), but theirs carry imperial measurements.

If the gadget mark you refer to appears on the under side of the foot then it's a shears mark -  gadget marks only ever appear on the top sides of feet.             Your suggestion of date is probably about o.k.

The other rummers showing rough scars under the feet, may have been pub or tavern glasses  -  they possibly date to anywhere from 1870 to 1920, but difficult to be sure from screen pix only.

I think Keith is getting good at these things - perhaps he might look in ;D

;D ;D  I've just downed a can of Speckled Hen, plus a very large bag of Doritos - my mouth feels like the inside of refuse bin. :'(
