Title: Two unusual miniature vases have me stumped 🤔
Post by: Andy on June 18, 2020, 12:13:56 PM
A couple of well made, small but perfectly formed vases. Earthy colours, seller suggested possibly Mdina, I could tell that was wrong, but bought them because they are unusual and well made.
Out of curiosity, I’d love to find out who made them. Maybe studio, or Bohemian. No signatures
5 and 6.5cm tall. Quite thin delicate glass.

First post for several years 🤔 I haven’t been very active with my glass collecting , but I’ve recently rekindled my interest, and have seen some familiar names on a few Facebook sites and many on here too.

I wonder if anyone has seen something similar to these little pieces, or can point me in the right direction.
Best wishes to all
Andy

The colours look very Mdina but I've not seen those shapes before, I'm sure someone will know !  ;D ;D

:)Can we see them lit from the front pretty please? These pics are all back lit, which shows some aspects, but not what it looks like when the light hits the surface.
Absolutely not Mdina - too thin, the yellow too luminous, the wrong sorts of bases.
The similarities come from the use of silver salts to create colours, that's all.
I wondered Hortensja, but don't think so.
I don't think Ed Iglehart or Tom Young either.
Lauscha?

They look and sound like lampwork, but I can't see the bottoms terribly well.

Here’s some brighter pics. The base is indented but smooth. Definitely very well made. I wondered about a Bohemian origin, as several companies made miniatures, but I don’t recognise the style, and  I don’t think there’s much age to them.

Have you checked if they glow green?

No, they don’t glow

I would doubt it - it is just a rather luminous yellow.
Can you tell if they are lampwork? The photos of the bases are still not clear enough for me to see, but it's the right sort of shape for lampwork.

I’ve never looked closely at lampwork, it usually doesn’t really appeal to me, I would imagine if it’s done with a blowtorch, you’d notice some imperfections, I think the thing that intrigues me, is the flawlessness of both.
I can’t see any signs of a pontil mark, so would that be a clue to lampwork 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm sure they are lampwork.  :)
That is the sort of base you end up with fine and with a kick-up in the middle, no seams, all smooth.
I might well have dismissed lampwork myself, if I hadn't discovered Ed Iglehart early on. 8)

Thanks Sue, I’ve had an interesting trip round the web, read all about Ed Inglehart, looked at links and pictures, most of which
lead back  to here and yourself.  I was beginning to think he was a possibility, but his stuff is more fluid and organic with the odd flaw.
He seems a fascinating chap, and as you say, now mostly a treehugger. 🌳
Here’s one link, and there’s another on this site which has photos of your pieces, but I can’t copy and paste it or find it with the search function 🤷🏼‍♂️

Quite a few links to auction sites, so I presume he’s quite sought after and collectible although couldn’t see prices.
I think you’re right , it’s lampwork, probably not Ed though. It’s not particularly important in the grand scheme of things, but I’ll keep looking for clues out of curiosity.

Edit. I also found his pieces in Charles Hajdamachs book of British glass !

Ed has retired from glassmaking and teaching, and is now a tree planter.  ;D
He is running around, planting fruit trees, for the benefit of local people and insects. 8)

I've found a pic in my recesses. I have a few more now - including one like the frontispiece in Hadjamach, with the burst "bubble" at the bottom.  :)

Lovely. Thanks Sue, that’s the photo to the link I couldn’t find when searching on the GMB .

Hebron Glass made stuff with silver salts, but I can't find out if their work is lampwork or not, and I haven't found these shapes.
These are bothering me!  ;D
