Title: Heavy hambone-ish vase with round pontil - any ideas?
Post by: createdbear on August 12, 2020, 08:55:49 PM
Good evening fellow members,
Picked this beauty up but am not sure of the maker. I guess we're all familiar with the shape! The base has a perfectly round cut polished pontil (Whitefriars style) and the colour is of a very, very pale purplish neodymium hue (the vase isn't Neod glass though). It does have one of those curved coloured bands, albeit very pale, towards the bottom of the vase, atypical of Murano pieces. The interesting thing is the rim. Rather than being flat and polished, straight across the top, the rim slants inwards. I've done a close up of this, which may lead to some ID (please), No marks or sigs to the base, Height is 6.5 inches and widest width is 4.5 inches. Heavy too...1272 grams. As always, grateful appreciation if any one can ID the piece please. Thank you.

I thought I'd add a couple of better pics.

Maybe Whitefriars and their evening sky colours. Your photos are too fuzzy to tell, no idea if this shape was used or a slanted rim like that. Seen similar rims occasionally with Iittala and Strombergshyttan.

Hello John,
Thank you for your input.
It is a bit of a mystery isn't it.
The base is very Whitefriars, particularly the pontil but the rim is telling me no.
I thought maybe Scandinavian and indeed, I did think Stromberg. But the Scand companies, and there are a quite a few of them, did this type of heavy glass. I've had a look at Strombergshyttan but can't find anything like it. I will have a look at Littala. Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure that's not Whitefriars. Rim and base are wrong. Base does look a little stromberg-ish apart from the lack of signature

Hello Jeffingtons, Thank you for your input. I agree re the Whitefriars and rim...it just isn't WF. The problem that I have is that the base has a lot of shelf-wear scratches but I have looked very closely to see if there are the remains of a sig but there isn't. I am at the point of Scandinavian now.

Hello
My first thought was Stromberg as well, but I never saw a color like this at Stromberg and the rim is different to other Stromberg rims, this one is too steep. All Stromberg peaces i own are marked.
So I doubt Stromberg hyttan

Thank you Monika, I guess I can rule Stromberg out then. I guess the ID of this lies in that slanted rim although the base and its perfectly round pontil could help. I'm still leaning towards Scandinavian but who knows. The mystery continues.
