Title: Kaj Franck Blue Tumblers Date Help Request
Post by: Roobarb on September 04, 2020, 09:27:09 AM
Hello, I wondered if anyone knew how to date Kaj Franck tumblers. I have this pair of cobalt blue ones but not sure when they date from...I've looked online but can't seem to find a reference. Thank you :)

Hello Roobarb, have a look at the current iittala.com site. there is some info and pictures of Kaj Franck glass.
It may be your glass was a classic Nuutajarvi design that started to be remade in 1993 for the 200 year anniversary of the glassworks.
You cant go wrong with any era of Finnish glass.

How is the mark on the base made?
Is it moulded in the glass itself? It doesn't look like a Kaj Franck signature, but the images do not blow up to be clear enough to see it properly.  :'(

The designers name is put there as part of the moulding process.
A few classic designs are still made by iittala and carry the names at the base of the glass.
Aino Aalto
Tapio wirkkala
I think this is a relatively modern thing.

It's a new thing to me, thanks very much indeed for that and for adding the other mould marked names too, Tim.  :)
