Title: what was this glass ball for?
Post by: Fuhrman Glass on October 16, 2020, 05:50:43 PM
I've had this for about 30 years and have never been able to definitely identify what this glass ball and metal bracket were used for. Any help? Ball shows now scratches or wear.

It looks exactly like the lower half of a wall mounted coat hanger. I've just checked the ones in our lobby and they have ceramic balls on their ends. The metal bit attached to the wall is at the same angle as your bit. The upper metal part is a bit more question mark shaped, with a (ceramic) ball on top.

Sort of like these things, in general.

Thanks, That is what I always presumed it was but the ball was made with a shoulder and a bottom on it that fit exactly into the metal and there is a seam line on the glass so it was definitely molded .

Things were well made when these were in vogue, so the ball being customised to it's prong isn't that unlikely ;)
My ceramic balls are glued on, they don't twist freely around. The balls protect the clothing that is hung from them.

Dimensions would help, but I suggest a hat hook

The cloakroom hooks I was referring to have a ball for the hat on the top part, this looks like the bottom, coat bit.  ;)
