Title: Bristol Green Uranium Wine Glasses.
Post by: NevB on December 24, 2020, 02:51:02 PM
These seem to be a mixture of styles. The thumb cut bowls at first made me think they were late Victorian but they could be earlier. They are made in three parts with ground pontils which have slight swirl marks. One has a slightly domed foot but the other hasn't been domed so it sits on the edge of the pontil causing it to wobble.

Hi, I thought the cutting on these would be called facet cut, I think of thumb cut (or printies) as a row of separate ovals around the bowl. In Hajdamach on page 47, plate 32 shows a glass cut like yours (btm left) from the Webb Richardson factory, c.1830. So the style of cutting dates back at least as far as 1830...and probably anytime since  ;)

Thanks Ekimp, yes I suppose they could perhaps be called petal cut, the bowl shape looks modern and I can't find anything like it from the 19thC. I haven't got a copy of Hadjamach, I suppose I'll just have to buy one  ;D.

I find that book quite useful and it seemed to be recommended and used as a reference on the forum quite a lot. Mine was inexpensive from a second hand book shop. It is quite a big book - it might use too much precious shelf space  ;D

Bookcases often make very good glass cabinets.  ;)

I can highly recommend that book :)
I use it along with the second one and my Bohemian glass books more than any other.  It is very dogeared but was worth every penny.

Thanks flying free, I've just ordered a copy, now all I need is another "bookcase".
