Title: Question - Hyalanthine glass from Thomas Webb
Post by: flying free on February 10, 2021, 08:36:13 PM
I'm just reading a report from Melbourne 1880/1881?  exhibition and it mentions Thomas Webb's Hyalanthine glass , 'recently patented'.
Does anyone know what this is please?

I have a couple of lousy pics of Hyalinth glass taken through glass walls of cabinets in Edinburgh Museum (the one down at the bottom of the Royal Mile). I don't know if they're Webb, or Hyalinthine.
One is a sort of trophy style vase, in rich browns and reds, castellated cutting on top rim, cut with rondels to show the different layers of colours.
The other is a flat plate, iridescent in greens and yellows. I can send you the pics if you like, I can't work the pc to resize. :'(

Oh thanks Sue.  I'd never heard of Hyalanthine glass and am curious to know what it looked liked.

From your description it sounds a little like a chalcedony type effect.

Yes, but more in thick layers - very, very sophisticated chalcedony-alike.
I've sent you the two pics I have.  :-* Do anything you like with them.

If you want to post them here, you're welcome to. I dug them out of recovered stuff and can't resize or I would have done it myself. :)
