Title: Help with iridescent Covered Compote
Post by: cre8tive101 on February 21, 2021, 08:58:42 PM
Hello,

I have a beautiful covered compote that I could use some help identifying, please. I'm not who made it, its pattern, and is it Carnival Glass? The compote has a design of Rings from the foot to the top of the lid.  It has a rainbow of iridescent colors on the exterior, like Carnival Glass. The interior is left untreated and is very shiny cobalt blue glass. It is 10-1/2" tall, not mold lines that I can find. Looking at the bottom there's a hole through its stem, so it's hollow. My picture doesn't show how bright and shiny the colors really are. Has anyone seen one like this or have any idea who made it? Thank You!

Hi and welcome to the board.  Your piece is iridescent but not carnival. Carnival is pressed glass with a pattern rather than simply plain iridised glass. Have a look here and you'll see what I mean: https://www.carnivalglassworldwide.com/

Thank you for your reply confirming that the compote isn't carnival glass. I do know that carnival glass is pressed glass with mold lines, with the older item having three lines. It's being iodized has made it difficult to determine what type of glass it is. Also, who may have made it? The quality of the glass is much better than that of pressed. It does have a ring when tapped. So it must contain flint or lead. It's not just plain glass. Its pattern is of the design of the piece. It's all rings or ridges. When I bought it many years ago I thought it was a piece of Heisey, from the Saturn line they did. After researching I found that it was not. So I moved on to Cambridge then Paden City and Fostoria. None of those either. I do know that there is some age to the piece. It belonged to someone's grandmother who has long passed. I've had it for over 10 years now. So I'm lost on where to look at this time. I have many books and have seen items close to it but not the same.  Thanks again for your reply.

Can you provide a photograph that enlarges more clearly and against a white background in plain daylight please?
Also a pic of the base and foot underneath?

I wonder if this might be  Bohemian glass ?

Thank you for your interest in helping me with this piece. I did take more pictures in the natural light for you to view. I'll upload them now.
Thank You!

Could it be Italian, Empoli? and possibly an apothecary jar rather than a compote?

Thank you for that. It never crossed my mind that Empoli could have made this piece. I've had many Empoli pieces of glass in my time but never seen anything like this by Empoli. Mostly encased glass is what I have seen besides the Blenko look a likes that Wayne Husted designed while he was there. I'll do some research on Empoli, see if I can find anything like it or close to it. Thanks again for the thought.

I would assume Bohemian for now, how much iridescent glass do you see from Empoli?

Ivo asked about similar wares a few years ago: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,62522.0.html

I know Empoli did make many types of glass items. They used many different treatments as well.  Personally, I don't recall ever seeing any iridescent glass by Empoli but it was worth a try searching. I found things that I own myself that were made by Empoli. Maybe someone will see this post and know for sure. Until then I'm clueless. Thank You. I have another posting on a piece of glass with threading all over it. Can you take a look at it for me? It's signed but can't make the name out. Thank You!

Hello John, using the link that you provided. A few of those pieces look very close to what I have. The blue vase and the bowl. Did you ever find anything more about them? Their age or value? Thanks!

We don't tend to discuss value much here, too subjective and way too many variables. Look at past results on auction sites and suchlike for an impression.

The shapes that Ivo showed in the other topic are generally associated with Art Deco, guessing maybe 1920s and into the 30s. Once in the depression years there was generally less disposable income for people to buy fancy goods, I expect these wares were a response to that situation. In glassmaking terms they are relatively simple, single colour blown to shape and then iridised, maybe less so for your compote but generally speaking fewer processes costing less to manufacture.

Thank you! You've been a big help. You are right, it does look very Art Deco.
