Title: UV Glow Q - Glows for me not another?
Post by: bwj23 on March 17, 2021, 01:25:26 AM
Hello, I am new to this amazing community!
My Q is: Why would UV work on an item for one person but not another?
Recently had an issue where the other person claims it’s not glowing, yet it was glowing fine for me and all my other items?
I’ve reached out to an appraiser with the Q and they have never heard of such a thing but suggested I look online. The item is no longer in my possession and I’m really stumped (or getting duped?!?!).

Is this a real thing?!?! Besides the possibly being duped, I’d like to know if this is a real topic & if anyone’s ever had that issue before. My light is a 365nm and works on all my other glass. This one particular piece is jewelry I sold to a lady who jumped right on it.

Anything you can provide would be super helpful & appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the board. Do you have photos of your item with and without the UV glow? We have members who are very good on uranium glass.

Hi BWJ23,

Were you both viewiing the item at the same time?
Was it a case of differing on "intensity of glow" or of shade of the colour?

Thank you Anne :-) We do have photos, I’m not sure how to load them while on my phone. When I do try pushing the Mona Lisa, nothing happens but a few letter characters. Kevin, no we were not. They purchased from another state. Why I’m curious if this is a thing, besides them want to possibly get a return. Which I’m certain it’s uranium. One worry is she popped the glass out & replaces it with something else. Again, I’m very curious to see if this is a thing. Once I dug out how to upload, I will post. Maybe my phone or browser too :-)

365 is not the best for uranium glass (I'm assuming that's what she was expecting), as it produces lots of false positives for uranium because it gives manganese-containing glass a bright green glow. A cheap 395 is better because it will pick up uranium with a bright green glow and manganese with a dull yellowish green glow that may be hard to see in daylight.

This is getting to be a big problem in the US where many people are after any glass that glows regardless of glow or glass colour and are using 365 lights to illuminate them. This then means that people assume that anything that glows green is "vaseline" glass and are selling and buying it as such. There is even a large Etsy shop selling dozens of pieces of colourless manganese-containing glass as uranium glass at (in)appropriate prices. I left two Facebook groups supposedly for uranium glass because it was all getting too silly.

If you want to sell, best specify your UV wavelength or get another light if you're selling as uranium glass.

Thank you everyone for your assistance & support!
Switched to desktop, still unable to figure out photos :-) but I will soon enough, so I made a google doc instead.

The lights she used was 395nm & 365nm.
I have a hobnail red bell that glows the Yalow with cadmium, very different in deed.
In regards to seeing a lot of UV pieces online & on FB groups I Q the integrity myself.
My other very clear bowls glow just as pretty as the brooch.

Please let me know your thoughts on the images :-)
Again, thank you very much for your replies!!

Part of the problem of uploading will be that this topic is in the Cafe, which doesn't allow attached images. I'll move it over to Glass where they can be attached. :)

I see your photos are taken in daylight and there's something about them which doesn't look quite right for Uranium glass. Perhaps there's something else in the glass which creates the glow.  ???

I can't see exactly but it may not be glass but could actually be a cabochon cut natural stone.

I don't think they are uranium glass; your picture isn't the right shade of green glow for a start. It should be very bright green not a bluish green. It could be the glue or the backing that is glowing, or they may not be glass stones. Blue uranium glass does exist but in almost 20 years I have never found any in jewellery except for bluerina beads, which are actually green uranium with cobalt blue like these https://804082.smushcdn.com/1636121/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/AB42ABB0-64F5-4C93-AA0C-C093C02C8216_1_201_a-scaled.jpeg?size=400x300&lossy=1&strip=1&webp=1
