Title: Royal Brierley Studio shade.
Post by: keith on April 17, 2021, 11:26:25 AM
Never seen anything like this before, 12 inches across, 6.5 tall, small chip to the rim, think the colour is called pearl, a bit of a whopper ! thanks to Nigel for spotting it  ;D ;D

Lampshades without a tiny chip on the rim are incredibly rare. The lamp shades themselves are very scarce. The chip is nothing to fret about.
It's gorgeous. The shape really shows the pattern well.
Pearl would be a correct description. I'm well chuffed for you. It's a beauty. 8) 8) 8)

It could be for a table lamp or be a ceiling plafont. It would depend on what fittings you could find for it.
Is there any way of tracking down original catalogues to see what was intended?

Lovely :)  I had a blue one - different shape. Dark turquoise.  I think I put it on the board somewhere.  Will have a look and link if I find it.
edited - I talked about it on here but didn't upload a photo unfortunately.

Oh it's come up on a different thread here:

and there's a shade similar to yours here - on a lamp:

Sue, I do have some catalogues but they are all lamp bases, I'll keep looking.
I've seen lamp shades like that M, the second one looks like a converted bowl to me.

It does.  But S&W were pretty good on lighting stuff so it's entirely possible it fulfilled both functions.  That said, I don't know how long their specialist lighting section(factory? )went on for.   It was around in the turn of the century and is talked about in the book dredging my memory.  Can't remember the name of it now though.

The Studio range lighting works were in Tipton, I'll ask Gwyneth Ashcroft if she knows anything about them, she's been in contact with David Williams-Thomas, maybe he'll remember something.
