Title: Help! Does anyone know anything about Franco Moretti????
Post by: GlassSeeker21 on July 14, 2021, 03:59:59 PM
I recently found an amazing piece of art glass at an antique mall and its signed by Franco Moretti. I've seen several other pieces online signed by this artist yet I cant find any information about him anywhere. Can anyone help me with info about this guy? thanks!

Put his name into the search box (the one on the LHS) of this board and there are lots of threads to read

Yes thanks, i've done that. I was just curious if anyone had any background on him. I have an amazing piece signed by him yet I cant find anything about him other than he lived in Murano....or still does.

So nobody has any info about Franco Moretti?....really hard to believe considering the quality of his work and that he worked in Murano. Anybody know of a better forum that might have more info on Italian glass blowers????

I've googled and found this article about his father. He is mentioned at the bottom. You might find some leads to follow there. It would seem he doesn't get a mention in wikipedia yet.
Art glass is not a well documented subject. 8)

yes thanks as well but I've seen that page already. Thats really the only thing I can find about that line of Morettis anywhere. It just seems so strange because its obviously a well know glassmaker family. Hard to imagine that there's nothing else anywhere about them online. All i've found out is that Franco is the son of Alessandro Moretti who was a well known glass maker from Murano.

;D Welcome to the world of Art Glass.  ::)
It really is not a well-documented subject.
Perhaps you could write to some of the people involved with that link, to ask them?

Yes I have wrote to  link mentioned in that article....no response though. I guess maybe I ought to be satisfied that I found a signed piece by a very talented glassmaker from Murano. I doubt Id ever part with it.

That's a shame. But it happens. Perhaps leave a reasonable period of time and try again?
Sometimes I've had wonderful informative replies, other times I've been ghosted, once, I eventually recieved a very nice written letter in the post, telling me the person I was asking about, who might know something, had died.
Is Franco Moretti not still alive? Can you find out where he is working and contact him directly?

I really have no idea if he's still working or if he is even alive yet. I've been scouring the internet and cant seem to find anything about Franco. I'm pretty sure he is a real person though and I've seen other pieces of his work for sale online. Maybe ill post some pics of the piece I have and see if it sparks any interest here.

You are not going to make a fortune with Moretti. From my POV he makes (made?) fine glass with strong colours and style. He seems to have focused on providing sets, perfume bottles, vases etc.  He struck me as a maker focused on making money rather than art glass and good on him!
I had a few of his pieces early on in my collecting but got rid of them. I think they are undervalued when compared to the rubbish out there.
There is a lot of it in Leslie Pina's Italian Glass. I suspected he ran a large glass factory as the output always struck me as large.
Reminds me a bit of Nason another undervalued glass maker.

Do you have any factual information about Franco? I strongly doubt the piece I've found was mass produced and signed as well. I'm not looking to make money from my collection. I just want a variety of unique quality pieces. It just doesn't make sense that if he were a high volume producer of art glass that he would have literally no recognition for it online. I will have to post some pics....

The question is, is your piece signed or is it marked. It may say Franco Morreti but that does not necessarily mean he signed it or even made it. Perhaps he just designed it

Ok so here’s my mindset on this. I truly was just curious about Franco and the history behind his glassmaking. As we all know, sometimes it’s extremely difficult to verify if a piece is what you think it is. I spent an entire evening just trying to figure out what the signature on the piece said and finding other pieces signed “Franco Moretti”. The antique dealer I bought the piece from said they researched the name and didn’t recognize the artist. Confusing fact I’ve learned about Franco’s signed pieces is that his last name was often written first from left to right. Very confusing when you are looking for a person you don’t now. So his pieces often looked like “ Moretti Franco”. His “F” looks like a “G” so nailing down the name was very challenging. In comparing other signatures I’ve seen on his work, I’m fairly confident mine is a match. I will post pics and let you decide for yourself. Even if this piece wasn’t made by Franco himself, it’s exceptionally well done and I won’t be partying ways with it anytime soon .

Franco Morretti seems to have been one of those prolific but mystery companies. I spent some time researching earlier today and it seems that no one knows much about him.

Hi, Can you post a picture of the item itself. Signatures on Murano glass are mostly taken with a grain of salt.
