Title: Painted Art Nouveau style Bohemian? bowl - concerned about the painting
Post by: chilternhills on July 18, 2021, 01:49:24 PM
I bought this bowl the other day from a well known antiques arcade because I liked it and because it was low priced. It seems to be similar to Loetz in style, but don't know. I guess the low price was because of the painting. It seems a later addition. It's quite well done, but probably devalued the item compared with the plain bowl.

It has a pleasing iridescent sheen and measures 19.5 cm diameter, 11.5 cm high maximum. The pontil mark has been ground out.

I am asking here if such painting was ever done contemporary with a similar bowl's making, i.e. immediately after? Might it be better than I think?

Thanks for feedback.

Anton

I'd say it is better than you think, it looks to be nice quality. The painting may be by the original maker or on a blank sold on to someone to be decorated. I would guess Bohemian, late 19th. century, maker unknown.
