Title: Scottish paperweight ID - unusual square design
Post by: SimonD on August 14, 2021, 02:22:07 PM
I would appreciate your views on my paperweight (maker, age, etc), which is very unusual in that it has a square design with a close-pack centre (perhaps a one-off?) The canes are laid out very precisely on a black ground, which makes me wonder if this is a made by Paul or Salvador Ysart. The paperweight is 3.3 inches diameter, with quite a low dome - 1.85 inches high. And the base has been roughly ground to remove the pontil scar.

Thanks in advance for your help!!
Simon D

Those canes look like Salvador/Vasart to me but it is a very nice weight with an unusual design

I agree with Dave, this is not by Paul Ysart. It is a really nice Salvador Ysart/Ysart Bros weight. The set-up is unusual and very successful. Great weight.

Hi Simon, It's been a while.

A siibling for your weight was briefly mentioned in the PCC Newsletter No. 124 - cover pic and brief commnets inside.

And yes, I agree with Dave and Sophie - an unusual patterned weight by Salvador. Other "different design" weights are known.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It's nice to know this is a Salvador piece. I'll definitely track down PCC Newsletter No.124.

Yes, Kevin, I've been inactive here for a while but have recently found myself with more spare time ... :-)

Thanks again! Simon
