Help please to ID this cut glass wine glass with a very distinctive stem.
Not much wear to the base but only sits on a very narrow outer rim.
36 star cut base.
Height 7.75"
Weight 220gmm

agree, I think most people would do the same. Having looked at some VSL goblets with cased/cut to clear similar to Roy's piece, it's difficult to find any with this hobnail/cane cut decoration - though of course it might just be me not looking in the right direction. Flamboyant knops - cut notches on the arises - fan splits, aren't a problem, it seems just the actual cut pattern that appears perhaps uncommon for VSL. Might be the other side of the pond - could be the U.K. - or even somewhere else on the Continent. I think we're going to struggle with this one, but fingers crossed.

There's a red one that came up on Pinterest that says it's signed. Not exactly the same as this one and admittedly not pattern book checked.

thanks - would appear to be a less than common cut pattern from VSL. Not my area, so probably shouldn't comment, but dating the linked pieces to pre WW II sounds a bit of a stretch, though of course the named pattern may well date to the 1930s. As you say - quite different to Roy's goblet in some respects, so difficult to be sure. Does Anne Tique still look in here - would be useful to have her opinion.

having a pattern match would be good because the stem design is unusual.
However VSL as far as I know did all the cuts, the overlay, the notches on the stem and that particular star cut on the foot.
Therefore I suppose that's where I'd start looking :)

am sure you're correct - can only assume I lack your stamina, and tend to give up looking if I don't see the answer reasonably quickly - too many other interests in life - particularly my book binding which consumes acres of my time. The States guys were also keen on notches, cane cutting etc., and it would be daunting to say the least to investigate the other side of the pond too. Motto - stick either to glass that has a label or signature - or go for stuff you can date roughly but which you know will always lack an attribution. If you've a month or two to spare, have a look at Jane Spillman's 'The American Cut Glass Industry' - mouth watering stuff.

It's just nice to discuss something unusual and different and you have a great eye :) ... and since my pockets aren't deep enough to be buying at the moment it's a pleasure to see other people's finds.
