Title: Heavy, cut crystal plate with serrated edge

Cut crystal is not usually my 'thing' but I bought it because of the quality. The cutting is extremely sharp and fine. The edge is minutely serrated and really quite sharp to the touch. That it survived more or less intact is amazing. About three teeth are missing, and it doesn't detract from the piece.

The plate measures 19.5 cm in diameter and about 3 cm high. It weighs about 700 g (1.5 lb), which is very heavy given its size. I presume lead crystal, but the appearance of the glass is slightly grey rather than sparkly clear.

Any ideas? It was bought locally to me, but it could come from other parts of Europe or America. I don't know its age. It could be Victorian.

great looking piece of cutting - nice find.   I'd suggest the finer cutting is mostly strawberry diamonds.          Unfortunately, like so much unsigned cut material, it may remain without attribution, and about the only thing of use I can think of suggesting is the possibility of The American Brilliant period (ABP)  -  of which we get very little on here, but it might be worth pursuing.     Also possibly an Irish origin.         I'm not suggesting it is either of these, but might be food for thought.
Presumably it was made as a decorative piece only - can't imagine it would be for actual use.            Can't really see the extent of wear  -  does it ring well if flicked?                                            Think I would have brought it home too  -  sorry this not of any real help.

Hi, looks like a nice plate, I like the serrated edge. It reminds me of the small saucer that I showed recently that was cut from a figured blank. See http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,70878.0.html

In your first photo in reply #1 showing the star cut base, there are areas of distortion in the ‘V’ cuts towards the outer edge of the star, at around the 4 and 11 o’clock positions. Is this damage or a reflection...or maybe a trace of a figured blank?

Thanks for your comments. There is no damage to the base. It's hard to avoid reflections when taking pictures of clear glass with lots of angles bouncing the light around.

I bought this plate for just pennies. I found it in a 'junk' section of an antiques emporium; a shame for such excellent workmanship. But this type of cut glass is so deeply unfashionable today.

I'll follow up the possibility of an American origin. My previous research threw up similar looking work.
