I am a novice - just bought yesterday - dealer had this marked as 1920's paperweight
Could it be a Ysart and could it be 1920's???
THere is a pontil at bottom

Pretty sure it is a Paul Ysart piece, but it will be later than the 1920s. I would have thought late 1940s - 1950s.

I have another paperweight that I bought at same time from an antique dealer - it was marked just as Murano - I have placed photos - and maybe you could take a look. From what I am reading I was wondering if a Chinese one - if so does that mean it wouldn't be worth much? On that note I would be interested to know your opinion on the worth of the Ysart (if that is something people give opinions on on this forum. Only for my interest - I wouldnt be selling either as bought because I love them. Forgive the questions if they are inappropriate

Hi Christine. I think that second one is Chinese, and of negligible value. A good way to check typical market values is to run a 'completed items' advanced search on eBay: that will show you what pieces are selling for, as well as some ambitious asking prices for pieces that remain unsold. If you do that for 'Ysart paperweight' you will find a few broadly similar pieces selling in the £150 to £200 range - but don't forget condition affects price.

Sorry to bother you, but can u tell me apart from the non polished base on the Chinese copy of the murano, what other factors did lead to th3 identifying it as Chinese, just so as I learn as I go along, I have read about the labels for nurano, but then the6 don’t all have labels do they?

The Chinese one is not a copy of anything, it is just a Chinese millefiore paperweight. The unpolished base is the main factor. The canes and colours are also typically Chinese.

Many thanks for info, sure others too will be interesting, by the way, the ysart weight does have a right rough pontil, am I right with my reading in places that the globby pontil suggests th3 age a bit?

The way the pontil mark / base have been finished does help 'suggest' the age. Pieces from the 1930s - 1940s are usually 'raw'. Pieces from the 1960s onwards usually 'tidied up'. But there is no hard and fast rule.
