Title: Kosta Boda Snowball Taper Candle Holder? ID Help
Post by: Roobarb on September 23, 2021, 12:47:14 PM
Hello, does anyone know if Kosta Boda snowball candle holders were copied? This one is unmarked and has no sticker, it also feels different to my larger snowball candle holder which is marked - it's somewhat more textured.

It made me think it might be a copy, but then I wondered if it may have just been made much earlier than my marked one. It's also for taper candles, which doesn't seem so common. Thank you in advance.

Moulds wear. Early pressings can be far sharper and clearer than later ones.
If the textures look the same, just feel different, it will be the mould wearing. Best to check if the appearance of the textures between marked and unmarked are the same.  :)
(Although there might be differences between the mould for the big ones and the smaller.)

Many are unmarked, and there were an awful lot made. I would doubt they have been copied.
Not that this is an area I know well,  :-[ the only famous copies of pressed Scandi glass I know of are the Timo Sarpaneva Festivo candlesticks. And if you know what they ought to look like, you can tell the difference.

I've not seen a verified tapered snowball candleholder so far, although there are several listings online for unlabelled ones claimed to be Kosta Boda. What worries me about attributing this to KB is that the Kosta Boda website states that the snowballs were votive (tealight) candleholder, there is no mention of a tapered candle version.

This is one of those claiming to be KB but with the narrower 1" diameter hole. https://emblanordic.com/product/kosta-boda-ann-warff-snowball-glass-votive-candleholder-small-2/ - to me this doesn't look like the votive versions.

Is the holder for the taper candle actually snowball shaped, or is it more straight sided?
I have seen smaller taper candleholders with textured sides which are more rectangular in shape, but never thought they might be small snowballs. I'm sure the glass metal is not as good a clear colour as Kosta either, it's yellower.

Thank you for your replies :)

Yes, I'm the same  Anne - not seen a tapered one with a mark or on any official site. The feel is quite different between the two which I have, the taper one is much more textured. When I brought it home to compare to my marked one, I was sure it was an imitation - but then I wondered if they maybe just varied or have changed over the years.

I would say it's definitely more of a snowball than a rectangle. As you said Sue, the Timo Sarpaneva ones are quite obviously different and this one wasn't, so it threw me a bit...

Photos of them side by side attached, tapered one is on the left...

;D It is not the same as the small rectangular-profiled textured taper canle holder.
From your first pic, it does seem as if the overall shape is the same too, it looks as if you have succeeded in placing them in the correct position in relation to each other to show that.
Can you confirm?
It's a lot easier to do when you've got them both actually in your mitts.  ;D

No, definitely not rectangular. Same overall shape in terms of they are both snowballs, but far from exact. I did read that they all do differ slightly. But, I do think this is a copy - especially as Anne said there's no evidence of Kosta Boda Snowball tape candle holders.

I meant were the textures identical, or just similarily snowball-like.
I know the surface is different, I'm talking about the entire shape. Can you match bumps, lumps and depressions? :)

Yes that's what I meant texture, surface shapes, lumps and bumps are different - just both overall shape of a snowball.
