Hi,
I have just acquired a small opalescent glass vase with what appear to be bees on it. It is etched Verlys France underneath. In looking on line, I can find many identical examples of the vase. However, the 'signature' on the base does not match any I have seen. It is not embossed - it is etched, but not, as I said, in a similar way to the ones I have viewed. Photo's attached - suggestions please![/img]

Hello and welcome to the board. ;D
That mark has been etched with a stencil. It doesn't look like a fake mark, it's not faked in any "normal fake" way. It's done in an official sort of way. ;D
I'm not familiar with every mark Verlys made, I'm more used to seeing it raised in a mould and on very thick pieces of pressed glass.
Is this a known Verlys design?
This isn't really my area, but I wouldn't be at all worried about that mark. I think a tiny bit of the stencil might have been over the edge of the base, at the start.
Somebody faking a mark would have made sure it was all on the base.

Thanks for the response.
It is, as far as I can tell, a known Verlys design. There is this one (the Bees), another described as Butterflies and another described as Moths.
As you say, it is clearly etched - but in all my searches I can only find either embossed Verlys marks or those engraved/scratched in a signature style looking mark - nothing like this, as you say stencil like etched version. To me it is reminiscent of writing done with a cut out pro forma. (Those plastic rulers with the alphabet and other symbols cut out for you to make neat headings etc.) It isn't really that important if it's genuine or not, as we like the vase, but I'm a little intrigued - it may give some clue as to age perhaps.

Exactly that kind of stencil, yes. :)
Just the top part of the letter V is a bit over the edge.
My memory is not the best. But I have a feeling it is absolutely right. And it's on a known design.
There are others here who know a lot more than I do about this kind of vase.
I understand that the style of mark may help with dating. Although I think knowledge of Verlys is not as common as we would hope. :)

Definitely genuine: model is called 'Les Phalenes'. I don't recall the pattern number, but I believe the design is shown in the 1937 catalogue.
The stencil mark seems somewhat uncommon but I have seen it before. I've seen other examples of this vase with a diamond point incised signature too -- not the small one used on US production, but a larger mark as seen on some early French pieces such as their blown wares with cased powders and air trap decor.

Just the person we needed. ;D
Thank-you for your knowledge Steven.
