Title: Sowerby 1029 Sugars
Post by: NevB on February 14, 2022, 10:11:07 AM
I bought these thinking they were Victorian and hoping they were Uranium which they're not. Having got them I thought they were probably more modern so I was surprised to find them in the Sowerby Book V addition from 1874, P.56, No.1029, under Sugars & Creams. I can't find them in the later catalogues so I assume they are Victorian. It's difficult to detect any wear on the bottoms as they have a finely stippled surface.

I don't think they are Victorian: they look very small for Victorian sugars, it would be unusual to have four and I would expect them to be uranium and the stems are much stubbier than the drawing. Maybe they are later dessert dishes and perhaps not even Sowerby even though based on that design

I think you are right Christine, although they probably have a bit of age.

Someone has several on Ebay identified as "Mettamec" but I can't find anything about that maker. If they fetch the sort of money they're asking for I'll be happy.

I've just been informed they are part of the Marimekko range by Iittala, known as "Maribowls". I'll research further.

I don't think they are Marimekko either, those too have more graceful curved stems, even in the smaller size. Here's a nice labelled pair https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/littala-marimekko-glass-bowl-set-1792678204

I think this is one of those designs that has been produced for generations by various glassmakers. There are clear ones in 3 sizes in the Spring 2013 La Vida catalogue (not in the current one though). I also seem to recall seeing them in an Italian mass-produced glass catalogue as ice-cream bowls, but I can't recall which one. ;'(

Thanks Christine and Anne, mine are more squat than the Iittala ones I've seen and the frills around the rim are more rounded, I'll keep looking.

I'd come to that conclusion too Christine, a disappointment but I'll pass them on.
