Title: Heinrich Hoffman Salt/Pin Dish.
Post by: NevB on February 25, 2022, 03:04:02 PM
I'm going to risk it and say this dish is by Hoffman although it hasn't got a butterfly mark and I can't find the design in the available catalogues. The figures are well done and it has a facet cut back and ground rim. Size is 63x50x13mm.

I'm going to say it's not Hoffman if you can't find the design in the catalogues and it doesn't have a butterfly. I've never found any uranium Hoffman and the pin dishes are usually simply pressed, not cut. They weren't the only company making this sort of thing, but I don't know who made yours

I'm not worried that it doesn't have a mark as I think not all of them did. Pamela has a marked oval one in her ashtray section in green uranium and also one in amethyst uranium?

They do not match yours.

I didn't mean to say they did John, I was just citing them as an example of Hoffman using uranium glass.

This page of the catalogue is interesting, note particularly the line " C en rose & radium, jaune et vert", "in pink & radium, yellow and green". This would be disconcerting if they meant Radium which would be extremely dangerous. An article on Pressglass-Korrespondenz  says this is "presumably uranium coloured".

Actually it says the yellow and green are coloured with uranium, not the rose (pink) and radium; note that colours are paired. Without a butterfly, you'd be hard put to prove it was Hoffmann if it is not in the catalogue. I also didn't say Hoffmann didn't use uranium, just that I've never found any. I also think Pamela is wrong about the amethyst uranium; it is most likely manganese used as a colorant, particularly in that shade of purple; it would give a decent green glow.
