Title: Toy opaque twist glass
Post by: markhig62 on April 19, 2022, 12:20:42 PM
I recently bought this as I was intrigued by its small size (height 11cm, bowl 4.1cm diameter and foot 5.4cm). I have seen a similar small glass labelled as 'Toy' but these glasses (if they are indeed a category of glass) seem to be very rare. It was sold as 18th century which I think may be correct (striations on foot and bowl, clear pucella marks, inclusions) however, I was a little surprised at the thickness of the bowl. The foot has a small flea-bite and I think it has been polished. Any ideas or information welcomed.

Hi, it looks like a Dutch soda glass opaque twist small wine.  Is it soda?  Doesn't ring long when flicked with a nail?

Hi Neil

It could well be soda glass - doesn't ring for long but looks like lead glass. I thought the shorter ring might be just because of the small size of the bowl but I did have my suspicions. 18th century though I would think?

Yes, 18th century Dutch c1770.  They made a lot of small opaque twist glasses in soda glass, especially with ovoid bowls in what they call "little eggs" - see attachment.
