Title: Large Peach coloured bubble glass vase
Post by: bat20 on May 20, 2022, 02:23:38 PM
Hi , this piece is 23cm high with a broken pontil and a lot of mosey wear on the base , I don’t think it’s a Walsh piece as it seems more loosely made.Any thoughts thanks .

Better one of the base

I can't see properly but if the pontil consists of a ring which is smooth on the inside like the rest of the base it might be by Biot, and the bubbles look right for them. Having said that I've got some Biot pieces with a rough snapped pontil.

Probably right Nev ,must be a fairly old one with that particular type of wear .

I gather this bubble glass technique was produced in several Biot glassworks starting in 1956, so potentially it could be over 60 years old. I did wonder if it might be Stevens and Williams but I think the pontil would have been smooth ground.

Yup ,although it’s obviously blown by someone who knew what they were doing I should add the rim is flattish and hardly worked on ,I have no idea if that’s a clue for Biot though .

This is a Biot jug for comparison, it is etch marked  "Verrerie de Biot" but not all older pieces were. The rim is fairly smoothly finished but again not all are. The pontil is quite distinctive.

The pontil mark seems different but it is a weighty piece
