Hi there, I have recently acquired this studio glass goblet - it has a very rough pontil scar and ochre / silver chloride style feathering on the bowl. It's 16cm or 6.25" high and the foot has a very purple hue to it.
It is signed on the base but is hard to decipher but looks like 2 words but I can't decipher them currently. I did wonder if this was maltese or 1970s studio glass ?
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Rob

:) Could you try rubbing some talc or cocoa powder over the signature with your thumb, to help bring the marks up please?
I really don't think it's Maltese. Early studio - or a student piece.
All early studio is pretty much somewhere on the learning curve. ;D
The design in the bowl is reminiscent of Anthony Stern, but I can't make that out from the marks - unless they're upside down?

Interesting goblet, I'm wondering if this could be an earlyish piece by the late Karen Lawrence.
I'll see if I can dig out another signature for you to compare.

Here is an example of her signature for comparison, I wondering if yours may be a little more compact due to the fact that its on a goblet.

Hello, thanks for the help so far - Karen Lawrence could be a possibility - I did wonder if it was early Peter Layton initially. I have talced the signature but it didn't really show up any better although attached are a couple more shots in different light.
thanks

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the extra photos, I still think its probably by Karen Lawrence. Karen worked at London Glassblowing so would have been influenced by Peter Layton, especially in her earlier career.

I think the signatures match up rather well.
Gorgeous vase, Greg. :) And I like the goblet too, Rob. 8)

Thanks Sue. I'm also fond of the occasional studio goblet!
I gather London Glassblowing had a memorial exhibition of Karen's work back in 2016. Interesting to see a goblet by her.
