Title: Ercole Barovier? Murano Iridescent clipped rim bowl 1940s??
Post by: CharlieC on September 18, 2022, 08:42:45 AM
I have this nice quality green/pink iridescent crystal glass bowl with clipped and folded rim and polished base.
It looks like it might be Murano from the 1940s - 1950s and possibly by Barovier, although I can't find this exact bowl. Does anyone know if I'm on the right track and possibly help in identifying this piece. Many thanks

Your photos are a bit small to see the detail clearly, can't see any sign of pink either. Take a really close look at the ribs on the underside - are they the same colour as the rest of the bowl?

This website only seems to allow a max individual file size of 125KB, which is small...?
"Your file is too large. The maximum attachment size allowed is 125 KB."

I've attached one trying to show the iridescence. The ribs underneath do seem to carry the same colour glass (not clear) In other words, the same iridescent green glass density throughout. Cheers

Size as in the actual image rather than the file size, photos that are around 600 or 700 pixels for the longest side are better. Photos I have just posted here are 700 pixels long with a file size of less than 40kb.

Yes much, your bowl does look to be a cut above the majority in terms of quality, scratching my head a bit as to who might have made it. From memory iridescent finishes are relatively unusual for Murano, not sure why that might be other than simply fashion of the day. I would also take a look at Archimede Seguso (purely because of those ribs) and maybe Seguso Vetri d'Art as well.

Found a couple by Flavio Poli from around 1940. Similar technique, colour etc.
Still not found my bowl. Did they make a number of the same shape or could it be a one off?

Looking for something else I've seen similarly ribbed bowls attributed to Alfredo Barbini.

Found this piece attributed to Ercole Barovier c.1940. Similarities with my bowl, heavy ribbed and scrolled iridescent... Could it be one of his?

The last few images you have posted can cause copyright issues, a link to an image on line is fine instead. Not every attribution you find online will be accurate, even when it comes to glossy sales sites.

Yes, you’re right. Will post links from now on. Thanks

Not sure how much use there two photos are but the items have a similar colour and iridescence, I am somewhat hazy on who made them but probably had them down as Salviati when I sold them. Have since seen another attribution for the bowl but unfortunately don't recall what that was.

Nice. Like the Romanesque piece. I’m fairly confident that the colour, described earlier as ‘Nordic Green’ is pretty close. Rather hoping mine is a piece by either Poli or Barovier!

Flavio Poli designed for SVdA, I see from Wikipedia he was artistic director at Barovier for a while as well as working for a couple of other companies.

Hope I've copied this correctly... An iridescent bowl attributed to Ercole Barovier? The base is interesting... Looks very similar in finish to my bowl.
